Students Against Superbugs-Africa is a student-driven initiative under the guidance of qualified health professionals to mitigate the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in African communities using a One Health Approach with a keen focus on rural areas and urban informal settlements
Their fantastic video series is targeted to educate the public, especially young people. The programme aims at stimulating increased engagement in AMR, especially for students and professionals outside the healthcare space, by showcasing AMR to be not only a health challenge but an economic and social challenge as well.
Episode 1: What is Antimicrobial Resistance?
Giving an overview of antimicrobials and their use, including an introduction into the concept of antimicrobial resistance.
Episode 2: What are the mechanisms of Antimicrobial Resistance?
Explaining the complex mechanisms of AMR, starting from a description of the core components of the bacterial cell and their roles.
Episode 3: The dangers of a post-antibiotic era; why do we need to act NOW?
Telling a story about the health situation before the discovery of antibiotics when it was common to die from simple infections and pointing out the miraculous effects of antibiotics and their major role in the improvement of healthcare.
Episode 4: What are the practices driving Antimicrobial Resistance?
Describing some of the factors that have led to a surge in the number of drug-resistant infections, with an equal focus on human health, animal health, plants and the environment, and showcasing how all these factors intersect.
Episode 5: The global burden of Antimicrobial Resistance
Presenting the actual statistics and figures collated by credible organisations and institutions, and the damaging impact of AMR on procedures such as chemotherapy and surgery as well as the economic and social implications of AMR.
Episode 6: Why do we need more efforts and initiatives on Antimicrobial Resistance?
Showcasing different efforts international organisations, local governments and other stakeholders have taken to address AMR, and why these efforts are not enough.
Episode 7: Actions you can take to slow down the spread of Antimicrobial Resistance
Presenting a tiered approach developed by the Antibiotic Guardian initiative to guide you on how you can take action.
