Determining academic attitudes toward public engagement πŸ™‹πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

An MSc research project at Swansea University

Public engagement is crucial for bridging the gap between academic research and societal impact. Our latest project aims to explore how academics perceive and participate in public engagement activities.

Improving public-researcher collaboration requires an understanding of these perspectives. We are therefore inviting our academic colleagues to participate in this study to determine motivations and barriers, ultimately guiding strategies for effective communication of scientific research.

Who can participate?

  • Post-graduate students (MSc/PhD or similar)

  • Postdoctoral researchers

  • Professional staff

  • Academics

What do we need from you?

Just 10 minutes of your time to complete the online questionnaire. That’s it!

Ogbukagu Chioma

Chioma is an MSc Biomedical Sciences student at Swansea University. With a strong passion for Microbiology and Public Health, and a keen interest in bridging the gap between scientific research and public awareness, she is conducting a research project focused on determining academic attitudes towards public engagement. Throughout her academic journey, there has been a consistent dedication to understanding how academics can effectively communicate their work to the public, aiming to foster better understanding and collaboration between the scientific community and society.

What is your favourite bacterium? β€” My favourite bacterium is Escherichia coli. Because of its pivotal role in scientific study, its uses in biotechnology, its contribution to our understanding of genetics and molecular biology, and its dual nature as a potentially harmful and benign bacterium, E. coli is a fascinating organism. Scientists and researchers love it because of its adaptability and significance in many other domains.

What did you want to be growing up? β€” I wanted to be a medical doctor. Guess I am not too far off that.

How do you relax? β€” I love listening to music and travelling.

What is your favourite food/meal? β€” Pounded yam with white soup.

What was your nickname in school (and why)? β€” Chomymaur (coined from my first and middle names)
